What is a POP3 Server?

A POP3 server uses the Post Office Protocol, to hold users' incoming e-mail until they read or download it. The POP3 protocol is simple and does not offer many features except for download. Its design assumes that the email client downloads all available email from the server, deletes them from the server and then disconnects. POP3 normally uses port 110.

What is a SMTP Server?

An acronym for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, SMTP is used when email is delivered from an email client to an email server or when email is delivered from one email server to another. SMTP uses port 25.

What is a Relay Server?

Most of SMTP Server does not accept email delivered from non-local user directly. Relay server is responsible for delivering the email to the final destination. It is usually a full-fledged mail server, or can be a specialized SMTP Service. Because of SPAM problems, relay servers are normally locked down, either by IPAddress or by some type of username/password authentication.

How to setup the Mail Server?

If you haven't used a Mail Server before, the Mail Server Setup Wizard can help you configure Chipmailer in a few simple steps. To start this wizard select Tools->Mail Server Setup Wizard from the menubar.

The mail server should have at least one domain to deliver mail to the local POP3 mailboxes. For example: If the domain is 'chipmailer.com', emails like info@chipmailer.com and admin@chipmailer.com will be delivered locally. All other unrecognized domains  wiil be forwarded to the appropriate mail server (if message relaying is enabled).

Enable message relaying (Configuration->Relay) if you want messages for non-local domains to be delivered to their associated mail server. You must enter a valid DNS server to enable the server to query for the correct mail server address. Chipmailer will get the DNS setting which you connecting to internet from registry(if available) for you.If you do not know the DNS server address, please consult the documentation from your ISP for the DNS server address.

Add one or more user accounts/mailboxes. Each user account will get it's own folder to store messages.

How to configure my email client

Create a new account in your email client and enter the IP address or fully-qualified host name of the server as the incoming mail server (POP3).

Enter the same IP address for outgoing email (SMTP). If you do not know the IP address or fully-qualified host name of the server, select Tools ->What is my IP address? from the menubar.

The account name and password are the values you've entered in the User Account setup page.

If your Mail server is behind a router and you want to access the server from a remote computer, you also have to configure this router so that it routes POP3/SMTP traffic to your PC. Consult the documentation of your router for more information.

How to ensure the correct DNS entries and firewall/NAT configuration

Setting Chipmailer to receive email for this domain requires the correct DNS entries and an open port in your firewall.

To ensure the correct DNS entries and firewall/NAT configuration, select Configuration->Domains, click 'DNS Test' button to conduct a sequence of tests. It's necessary to pass all the tests in order to receive the external connection and to receive the mails properly.

If you are not sure how to change the settings, please consult your device's manual, your device's manufacturer, the internet service provider,or your domain registrar/reseller for the assistance.
